The Science and Spirit of Sound Healing
Sound has always been more than just something we hear—it’s something we feel. I first learned this not in a healing space, but on a dance floor. Back in my college years in D.C., I was a party girl who loved dancing the night away at a rave called BUZZ. The big speakers, the pulsing energy, the way the music moved my body—it was everything.
I’ll never forget the crew of deaf kids from Gallaudet who showed up week after week. They would stand right in front of the massive speakers, raving their hearts out. They didn’t need to hear the music to experience it—they could feel it. That fascinated me. It planted a seed that sound is absolutely far more than just what reaches our ears.
Every note, every tone, carries a vibration that moves through us, shifting energy in ways we often can’t fully explain. Science is beginning to catch up with what many ancient traditions have always known: sound is medicine.
The Language of Vibration and Frequency
Everything is energy, and it all vibrates. Our organs, our bones, our cells, even our emotions—they all carry a frequency. When those frequencies are out of balance, we may feel stressed, ill, or disconnected. Sound healing works by introducing vibrations that help bring our system back into resonance.
When I play the bowls together, sometimes the notes create a smooth harmony, and other times they create dissonance. Each combination carries its own medicine. Most times, I'm guided purely by intuition, and I’ve also learned certain pairings that help support specific energies such as grief, restless sleep, anxiety, nervous system balancing, and more. They’re healing combinations of sound, simple yet so powerful.
A simple way to imagine this: think of a singer holding a note so perfectly high that it shatters glass. The frequency of the voice matches and overwhelms the natural frequency of the glass. In sound healing, the tones of the bowls interact with the frequencies of the body—encouraging what’s disharmonious to shift and restore balance. Instead of breaking, the body softens, recalibrates, and finds harmony again.
The Spiritual Side of Sound
Alongside the science lives the mystery. Sound has always been a gateway into the unseen. For centuries, chants, drums, and songs have been used in ceremony to connect people to Spirit, to the elements, and to one another. When we surrender to sound, we are invited into altered states of awareness, where healing, insight, and release naturally arise.
As a highly sensitive person, I’ve always known sound as medicine. A single note can bring tears of release, while a harmony can send ripples of joy through my whole body, my hips instinctively swaying to the rhythm. Sound moves energy. It clears, awakens, and reconnects us to the parts of ourselves we sometimes forget.
Where Science and Spirit Meet
What I love most about sound healing is the way it bridges two worlds. On one hand, it’s measurable—vibration, frequency, resonance. On the other hand, it’s mysterious—visions, journeys, emotions, and spiritual connection. And honestly, as a mystic, the mystery is my favorite part. Together, these layers make sound baths such a potent experience. And all you have to do is lie there and breathe.
They work on every level: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
